The National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) uses a centralized, dynamic content application—known as NDC—to provide public health officials across the nation with vital case surveillance resources. These resources can make case reporting more efficient and help public health officials focus their time on taking action to keep people healthy.
- Case definitions – Standardized case definitions enable public health officials to classify and report cases consistently across jurisdictions. The NDC application offers public health officials a single place to reference current and historical case definitions in a searchable library. Each year, NDC incorporates updates based on the recommendations from the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) Position Statements, which identify nationally notifiable conditions.
- Implementation guides – CDC offers HL7® Message Mapping Guides (MMGs) and CSV Implementation Guides to help health departments send notifiable disease data to CDC in an interoperable, industry-standard format. NDC hosts the latest versions of available MMGs, implementation resources, supporting documents for implementation, and information about guides in development
- Event codes – CDC maintains a repository of event codes. Each event code corresponds to a specific disease or condition, streamlining data storage and retrieval across local, state, and federal public health data systems.
Through its robust features and resources, the NDC application enhances the efficiency and accuracy of public health surveillance, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for communities nationwide.
